Evilion
Evilion was Shadowtext's oldest real attempt at amateur game-making. Though he had dabbled in game making before in QBasic and in modding other engines, Evilion was made in RPG Maker 2 for Super Nintendo. There were actually two such games made for the engine.
Origins
Evilion actually began as a Chrono Trigger fan sequel, but that aspect was dropped after the first iteration. Evilion became a romance story set in the middle of a war in its second iteration, but was still pretty mediocre. There was very little iteration involved.
The Name
The name has nothing to do with Evil. It was supposed to be a random but fantastic sounding name for a place, and unfortunately it came out sounding like a poorly named "Land of Evil." There's a good chance that any future iteration of Evilion will have a different name. That name has yet to be decided.
Summary
The story has since been reimagined, and though it is still essentially a love story set in the middle of a war, it has become something like a fantasized account of World War II. The main character now features heavily in the resistance movement against a genocidal alliance of wizards, with the stated goal of the story being for the oppressed resistance to found a "homeland" (the titular "Evilion") where they can be safe from their enemies.
In the course of the game, the characters must come to terms with the fact that not all of their enemies are truly evil, but like the people on their side, stuck in this war because the war is all around them....and they must find a way to end the war and bring about peace, without allowing the psychic Aeyads to be eradicated.
Characters
The four major characters have remained consistent throughout all iterations of Evilion. In the most recent iteration, three additional characters have become major players.
Ochal Argenta
At the beginning of the game, Ochal is a jester working for the King of Sepia. He has developed a strong friendship with the princess, Karal, and even a strong attraction to her. Despite this, he wrongly doubts that he would ever be found suitable by the King.
Ochal is an orphan from a village of psychics. His parents, sister, and everyone else he knew as a small child were caught in an attack lead by the genocidal group of anti-psychic wizards that serve as the villains for the game. He uses his telekinetic gifts in his current work as a jester, and is widely acknowledged as one of the best jugglers in the world.
Karal Sepia nee Basso
Karal is the princess of Sepia. She's an accomplished wizard, trained by an lovable old coot (aren't they all?), and an exiled member of the Windrider race. She was adopted by King Sepia after his own infant daughter died, when he was approached by her real parents. The Windriders had recieved a prophetic message from the game's villainous wizards that the daughter of the black-winged Windriders would bring about a terrible future, and they knew she would never be allowed a peaceful life with such a prophecy lain at her feet. King Sepia accepted their proposal, and adopted Karal as his own.
Karal returns Ochal's affection, though she has not said anything to him at the beginning of the game of course.
Elria O'Shay
Elria is a Dragonslayer hired to hunt down the dread dragon Ralu that plagues a small village. Though she is one of the most skilled fighters the Dragonslayers have ever seen, this is her first time facing a real dragon, and though she takes the responsibility seriously, she is excited about the prospect.
Elria is a fae, or a mortal with fairy blood. She is marked by the pointed ears and large, dark eyes of the fairies, but has little of their thirst for chaos and mischief. She is often mistakenly called an elf, though neither she nor full-blooded elves would take kindly to the misnomer.
Ralu
Ralu is a young rogue Ryong, or asiatic dragon. In her youth and indiscretion, she has made the mistake of hunting livestock from a small village near her roost, and has thereby made enemies of the humans there. When Elria comes to slay her, Ralu asks for the opportunity to prove to her that she is not an evil beast, and travels with Elria, Karal and Ochal in an effort to prove Elria wrong and to learn about human culture. She is locked into human form with a "collar" that Elria affixes to her neck.
Ralu is only a few years old when the game starts, though as dragons only take five years to mature, she is on the cusp of adulthood. The form she takes when masquerading as a human is that of a woman of about the same age as Karal, though she is much more naive than any of the others because of her lack of experience with human culture.
The Future
Though no new versions of Evilion have been made, the project is still on Shadowtext's list of future efforts.
Shadowtext likes to consider Evilion his "pet project," and therefore has avoided actually making it in any of the new engines that he's gotten ahold of because he has felt that they didn't live up to his standards or because he wasn't sure he could do the project justice yet. So in the end, who knows when he'll feel ready to make it?
